ZMG001 Group Placement - Helping a rural village

Location: Approximately 150km from Zambia’s adventure capital Livingstone.
Background Information: This 68 bed, Mission Hospital in a remote part of Zambia. Originally opened in 1944, the Mission Hospital is the only hospital serving a population of more than 33,000 people in an area of 170,000 square kilometres.
Arrival Airport: Livingstone International Airport.
Project Tasks: Building African style houses: for the most needy in the community. Volunteers can see and participate with our qualified staff in the building of these homes. They start with placing poles in the ground, then binding the smaller wood to them and finally in ³Mudding² in the walls and installing the door and window frames.
Pre School and Basic School: Volunteers can also assist the teachers in the pre-school, or the school where, if they possess the necessary skills, they can help the qualified teacher in the classes. The grades at the basic school are from 1st to 9th grade.
The Orphans and Vulnerable Children¹s Centre: located at the school and the volunteers are invited to observe and interact with the feeding program. The program gives a healthy lunch to those children who qualify for the program 6 days a week. After school hours the volunteers can go play and or read as needed with the children. And perhaps a little soccer game can be arranged. They love to play so it¹s not hard to put the teams together.
Hospital: Volunteers will also have the opportunity of volunteering in the out-patient dept. If they are qualified they would be able to volunteer in the hospital.
Who Can Participate?: Maximum 5 volunteers per group.
IVP: as anyone that can teach Spoken English as their Nº1 language, or learn how to physically help from other Participants.
SIVP: Medical Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists, Physio's or Occupational therapists. Plumbers, Builders, Electricians or Permaculture Gardeners etc are welcome.
Placement Costs: US$1250 inclusive of all food, accommodation, local transport and sight seeing activities including, game drives in Mosi-au -Tunya National Park, entrance to Victoria Falls and a weekend break in a hotel on the banks of the Zambezi.
With up to 40% of the fees used to purchase materials for developing this project, volunteers are offered a unique experience to help advance an institution which has a significant and sustainable effect on one of Zambia's poorest communities.
Meals: All food is provided whilst on site by a local cook.
Accommodation: Volunteers will be living in a fully self-contained house.
Transportation: Volunteers will be collected from Livingstone International Airport.
Visa Requirements: Volunteers must arrange their own visas.
Required Items: Warm clothes for evenings, sleeping bag, hat, sunscreen, towel, mosquito repellent and basic toiletries.
Note: Trips can be extended for longer than the minimum 26-day duration.
Volunteers need to book early to secure places as this placement can be very popular.
