GRCG09, SIKEON II - Thessaloniki

Dates: 01/08 - 17/08
Type: Environment
Location: The municipality of Sykies is a large department of the town planning unit of Thessaloniki, the second larger town of Greece (population 1.000.000). Sykies is partly connected with the Forest of "Sheikh Sou", a Turkish name that means Sheikh's water. This forest was a human creation in order for the city of Thessaloniki to be naturally crowned with a forest; a view of the city from above, shows the forest shaped as an arch. The city lies at the foothill of Kedrinos, a tump that was a clearing at first, but, since 1929 and in 60 years' time, almost 5 million trees were planted on it. Within the area of Sykies lies a part of the Byzantine walls of the town of Thessaloniki.
Terminal: Thessaloniki international airport "Macedonia".
Work: Volunteers will work in the Forest of "Seikh - Sou" and they are going to clean two parts of the forest, one of which is behind the Athletic Centre of the Municipality. If the groups complete the cleaning of the above areas, they are also going to place signs along the footpath behind the Athletic Centre in order for people to be able to walk in that area. Volunteers will also renovate a park of the town, so that the inhabitants and children of the town have the chance to perambulate and play.
Accommodation & Food: Volunteers will be accommodated in the Municipality's Gym (Toilets, showers and kitchen facilities provided). Volunteers have to bring their sleeping bag and a mat. Two volunteers will cook and clean everyday in shifts.
Free Time: In their free time, participants will have the opportunity to get in touch with the everyday life of the city; they may attend events organised by the authorities during the period of their stay (concerts, performances, etc.) and communicate with locals and tourists. Volunteers will discuss their free time activities with their camp leaders; together they are going to organise excursions and visits around the area.
