USI009 - Young Adults with disabilities

Location: Pennsylvania
Background Information: Residential volunteers from around the world run all of the activities and programs, and students and volunteers live together in a large community (80 people total).
Project Tasks: - Help young adults with developmental disabilities gain further education, life skills, social skills, and to explore vocations and work.
As a coworker, you will live and work in a household along with several other coworkers and students with disabilities, and be a primary supporter for one or two men or women within that household.
- Helping with physical care, laundry, room cleaning, and emotional and social support. Along with other members of your household team.
- You would be responsible to have an overview for the well-being of each person in the house, and actively support their growth and development.
- Outside of the house, you'd be involved in two or three other areas in which you had skills or interests, helping to support activities such as classroom education, gardening and land work, painting, pottery, woodworking, weavery, bell choir, sports, and others.
- Contributing to community festivals, celebrations and other special events is an important part of a coworker’s service.
Who Can Participate?: IVP. Volunteers who can help out in whatever way the community needs.
Meals: Meals provided by hosts
Accommodation: Volunteers will be living and working in households with young adults with developmental disabilities, and other volunteers – from the U.S. and around the world.
Hours of Activity: Each coworker receives one free day per week. There is limited free time available during work days. Additional free time is available in the context of the community's needs. Coworkers have demanding schedules, often working from early morning through late at night. It is important to realize that free time is limited.
Visa Requirements: It is the responsibility of all participants to obtain any necessary visas.
