ARI011 - Home for the Aged

Location: Province of La Pampa
Background Information: This placement is located in the town of Intendente Alvear, Province of La Pampa, centre of Argentina, where, despite it is a small town in the middle of the countryside, you will find many entertainments, specially those related to rural activity and folk events with local music, and typical Argentine food, asado (barbecue), horses, the Gaucho (Argentine Cowboy), and farming and rural activities and events. Intendente Alvear is also known for its international well-known family of polo players (los Heguy) and their breed of horses and polo courts.
Project Tasks: Accompany, talk, help and organize recreation activities for the aged staying at the house (we note a detachment of the aged from the society); Help during guided visits to town; Physical activities inside the building (exercises guided by qualified people); Strolls in the garden; Light tasks in the organic garden, conservation of the garden; Painting in paper or even the building inside and outside; Daily shaving and shower, hair cut, feet health, hygiene, etc.; Contact the relatives or tutors of the aged in order to improve their physical and intellectual condition encouraging activities related to their interests in life, organizing minimum activity plan (knitting, sewing, reading books and newspapers with or to them, if they cannot read (with explanations), watching TV programs (with explanations); Receive and implement ideas suggested by their relatives trying also to preserve and incentive the relationship with their families and relatives. All other activities that may mean taking the aged out of everyday routine with variations which will mean a personal incentive for each of them.
Who Can Participate?: Experienced or qualified volunteers in related fields will also be welcome: physiotherapists, yoga teachers, social workers, nurses, medical doctors, musicians, gardeners, painters, and all other volunteers who think they can contribute accompanying the aged and making their days easier and happier.
Meals: Food provided for free.
Accommodation: Provided at the Home for the Aged or at a nearby house with the family of some of the associates of the organisation.
Visa Requirements: It is the responsibility of all participants to obtain any necessary visas.
Required Items: Must speak Spanish at an intermediate level, be over 21 years of age and be able to obtain a current police clearance.
