UGI012 - Teaching in a rural school/Orphanage

Duration: Min. 4 weeks, max. 52 weeks.
Location: near Jinja, Eastern Uganda
Background Information: This school is in an extremely rural/poor area. The school is run by a local grass-roots organisation, that also assists the community in many other areas. The school buildings also houses a small number of orphans during the school term.
Arrival Airport: Entebbe International Airport.
Project Tasks: The school needs anyone with an interest in teaching and children to assist with classes in this rural school. There are approximately 200 children attending this school, and around 6 teachers. Volunteers will assist with all levels of classes in this primary school.
The school also houses approximately 10 orphans during the school term, so volunteers will also need to assist with these orphans in the evenings.
Volunteers will also have the oppurtunity to become involved in community development projects and Orphan and Vulnerable Children (OVC's) programs.
Who Can Participate?: IVP/SIVP: anyone with an interest in teaching and children are welcome.
Placement Costs: Food and accommodation provided for US$50 per week.
Meals: Local food is provided such as rice, matoke (mashed cooked green bananas), posho, meat, vegetables, fruit. Volunteers will eat with the orphans, but are also more than welcome to purchase and prepare their own meals. There is a supermarket in the nearby town where you are able to buy extra food supplies.
Accommodation: Volunteers will be staying in basic but comfortable volunteers/teachers accommodation on the school grounds.
It is a rural area, and there is no electricity or running water. Whilst the school is in a rural area, local transport is available to take volunteers into the nearby village during the days. This village is about 1 hour from Jinja and 2 hours from Kampala city - allowing for easy weekend breaks.
Visa Requirements: Volunteers are requested to obtain a tourist visa for Uganda.
Required Items: Warm clothes for evenings, sleeping bag, hat, sunscreen, towel, mosquito repellent and basic toiletries.
