UGI014 - Teaching in Kampala
Duration: Min 4 weeks, Max 6 months
Dates: Terms run from the start of February to late April; from early May to the beginning of August; early September to mid-December. Volunteers can only be placed during the school terms.
Location: Kampala
Project Aims: Older students are assessed to their current level of education and helped accordingly, they are also encouraged to take to vocational courses but many also go through the normal secondary education as well. This helps them for global market competition. The young adults that use this program need extra attention and rehabilitation to re-fit into society.
There are 20 teachers, 4 full time and 16 volunteers as there is simply not enough funding to hire more teachers.
Project Tasks: Assist with teaching English and/or sciences and vocational trades to disadvantaged and orphan students aged between 6-24 at a local primary, high schools and vocational colleges.
Who Can Participate?: IVP. Anyone with an English speaking background can assist with the English classes. Anyone with skills in vocational courses are especially welcome.
Placement Costs: Accommodation and food provided by a local host family for US$64 per week
