UGI006 - Teaching in a primary school
Duration: Min. 4 weeks, max. 52 weeks.
Location: Jinja, Eastern Uganda
Arrival Airport: Entebbe International Airport.
Project Aims: This school works towards to better community by providing a suitable primary education to children in the area.
The school also works with other local community organisation to assist with programs such as the following: HIV/AIDS assistance; care and support for Orphans and Vulnerable Children; household food security and agricuture programs; economic empowerment projects and Human Rights promotion.
Project Tasks: Primary School teachers are needed to assist with all levels of the school. The curriculum is taught in English.
The school also needs persons with music, singing, dance and drama to assist with the schools choir and other artistic areas.
Teachers are also needed to teach vocational skills to children in the upper levels of the primary school.
Who Can Participate?: SIVP. Volunteers must be a qualified teacher, or at least in their final years of an Education degree at university. OR, must have experience in vocation trades, or music, drama or dance.
Placement Costs: Food and accommodation provided for US$25 per week.
Meals: Local food is provided such as rice, matoke (mashed cooked green bananas), posho, meat, vegetables, fruit. Volunteers will eat with the teachers, but are also more than welcome to purchase and prepare their own meals. There are supermarkets in the town where you are able to buy extra food supplies.
Accommodation: Volunteers will be staying in the teachers accommodation on the school grounds with other teachers. It is basic accommodation, but you will be provided with a bed, mosquito net and sheets.
Jinja is one of Uganda's main tourist draw cards - with many activities to partake in on weekends.
Visa Requirements: Volunteers are requested to obtain a tourist visa for Uganda.
Required Items: Warm clothes for evenings, sleeping bag, hat, sunscreen, towel, mosquito repellent and basic toiletries.
