UGI013 - Orphanage
Duration: Min 4 weeks, Max 6 months.
Location: Outskirts of Kampala
Background Information: This orphanage has approximately 25 orphans. The orphanage also has a poultry project with approx. 300 chicks. The organisation also works with street children and children from impoverished families in the area. They also aim to ensure the children receive an education either at schools or vocational training.
Project Aims: Out of the 25 children, there is roughly 6 young children (1-3 years old), 15 children (5-12 years of age) and 3 girls of 17-18 years. Two of the have AIDS, and volunteers are needed to take them to the hospital monthly to collect medications. Volunteers need to be prepared emotionally for this.
During the term, volunteers can stay at the orphanage with the young children and those not in school due to funding, or can assist at a local school.
Project Tasks: Volunteers are needed to assist with all aspects of the orphans lives - feeding, cooking, cleaning, teaching about health and hygiene. Also helping with teaching English, homework, drama, arts and dance
Volunteers can also help with the administration of the orphanage and projects.
Volunteers can also assist with teaching at local schools during the term and with the outreach projects.
Volunteers can also assist with fundraising for the following projects and land purchase: 1. Handcrafts project.
2. Sewing & embroidery project
4. A project that offers catering services
5. Piggery project. This is too allow the orphanage to become self-sustainable in the future.
Who Can Participate?: Anyone with an interest in children can assist at this placement
Placement Costs: US$50 per week for food and accommodation. Volunteers will stay in the orphanage with the children. Local food is provided, volunteers are more than welcome to purchase and cook their own food to boost their diets.
There is also a local guesthouse nearby where volunteers can arrange to stay if they do not visit to sleep at the orphanage.
Accommodation: Accommodation is similar to camping style in terms of amenities. While volunteers will have a safe and secure roof over there heads, and possibly their own bedroom in the orphanage, they need to be prepared for bucket showers, drop toilets and no running water. There is electricity, as well as a T.V., and a computer - but electricity can be out for hours at a time.
Hours of Activity: Monday to Friday, weekends are free to visit nearby places.
