GHI010 - Public Health

Location: Kumasi Region.
Background Information: This placement is located in a small town with exciting people. It is a farming community with a secondary school and has access to basic infrastructures. It is about 15km from Techiman, the home of a West African food market. The population of the town is about 3000 people.
Project Aims: HIV/AIDS is a serious health issue in Ghana but the youth who are most vulnerable has little or no knowledge about the disease hence the need to carry out educational campaigns in the villages. There is also a need to reduce teenage pregnancies and unwanted pregnancies.
Project Tasks: Volunteer will embark on AIDS/HIV, Oral Health and Health educational campaigns in secondary and primary schools and the villages and communities in the area of the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Volunteers are also needed to assist with reproductive health education in the schools and villages in the Bekwai district (Cape Coast Region.
Who Can Participate?: All volunteers who are trained as medical or public health professionals. Students are also invited to assist, or those with a strong interest in public health education
Placement Costs: Volunteers are to contribute US$50 per week to cover food and accommodation with a local host family. This also includes an airport pick-up from Accra.
Transportation: Volunteers should budget approximately US$4 per day for transport costs
