KEI016 - Teaching in Nairobi's Slum areas
Duration: Min 4 weeks max 52 weeks
Location: Nairobi.
Arrival Airport: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Project Aims: The organisation aims to give these disadvantaged children a chance to break the cycle of poverty by providing education and a caring environment.
Project Tasks: - Teach basic classes in English, Maths, Sciences etc...
- Can assist in organising general school activities. ie debating and drama, fundraising for the school's operating costs,
- As well as guidance and counselling.
Who Can Participate?: IVP/SIVP. Volunteers must be fluent in English and should have some basic teaching experience or at least a proven interest in teaching.
All volunteers wanting to participate in this placement are required to submit a police report which clears them for participation in activities with minors.
Placement Costs: Contribute US$50 per week for accommodation and food.
Meals: Meals generally consist of rice, ugali and vegetables in sauce. You will get meat a couple of times a week. There is are nearby supermarkets where you can purchase any extra food you may need.
Accommodation: Live with the director of the school and his family.
Hours of Activity: Monday to Friday - 9am to 4pm. These hours are flexible
Visa Requirements: It is the responsibility of all participants to obtain any necessary visas.
Required Items: Warm clothes for evenings, sleeping bag, hat, sunscreen, towel, mosquito repellent and basic toiletries.
