KE1005 - Teaching Disabled Children
Duration: Min. 4, max 52 weeks.
Location: 130km from Nairobi, along the Nairobi - Mombasa Highway .
Background Information: Most of the children live at home with their parents or guardins, but there are a few orphans with-out disabilities that live at the school.
Arrival Airport: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Project Tasks: To assist a boarding school:
- Teaching children with disabilities. ie deaf, mentally disabled and only slightly disabled children.
- Volunteers can also provide care and support for the children, counselling for parents, advocate for the children and persons with disabilities and;
- Become involved in after-hours programs at the boarding school such as arts and craft, and drama.
Who Can Participate?: IVP/SIVP. Volunteers with sign language experience; physiotherapy and speech therapy skills are most welcome.
All volunteers wanting to participate in this placement are required to submit a police report which clears them for participation in activities with minors.
Placement Costs: Food and accommodation provided for US$50 per week
Accommodation: Volunteers will live with a Kenyan host family.
Visa Requirements: It is the responsibility of all participants to obtain any necessary visas.
Required Items: Warm clothes for evenings, sleeping bag, hat, sunscreen, towel, mosquito repellent and basic toiletries.
