AUI016 - Special Needs School
Duration: 6 weeks +
Location: Melbourne.
Background Information: The school caters for children with special needs - intellectual, physical, emotional and developmental. Classes are small and children with high needs are given extra support.
Arrival Airport: Melbourne Airport.
Project Tasks: - Programs that are concerned with skill development in the areas of daily living skills, personal-social development, occupational/work education and academic achievement.
- Volunteers assist with remedial English classes (particularly one-on-one assistance)
Office work (including answering phones and some typing if suitably skilled).
- There are also many 'odd jobs' around the school where volunteers can be very useful.
- Volunteer's interested in sports can assist teachers and students with sporting activities.
Who Can Participate?: IVP/SIVP. All volunteers wanting to participate in this placement are required to submit a police report which clears them for participation in activities with minors.
School welcomes volunteers bringing overseas teaching experience to the school.
Placement Costs: Accommodation is provided at a cost of AUD$ 55 per week.
Meals: Volunteers have to pay for their own food.
Accommodation: Live in the IVvolunteer's accommodation.
Visa Requirements: It is the responsibility of all participants to obtain any necessary visas.
Required Items: Warm clothes for evenings, sleeping bag, hat, sunscreen, towel, mosquito repellent and basic toiletries.
Language: a medium level of English is required
Note: This is a very busy school, and volunteers MUST be confident enough to take their own initiative, as you cannot be looked after and directed all the time.
