AUI042 - Endangered Species.
Duration: Min 2 weeks, max 12 weeks (can be extended on negotiation).
Location: near Rockhampton, Central Coast of Queensland.
Project Aims: There are only about 500 of this particular strain of Wallabies in the wild today. Volunteers may be involved in 'hand-raising' (having to take the place of an injured mother to bottle feed) some 'joeys' (baby wallabies).
Project Tasks: - Assisting with animal husbandry programs
- Preparing their herbal foods;
- Observing and interpreting animal behaviour
- Assisting with health checks
- Assisting environmental and conservation community awareness programs (attending public events).
Who Can Participate?: IVP/SIVP.
Placement Costs: Food and accommodation provided for AU$140 per week.
Accommodation: Volunteers will sleep in a shed/house sharing a toilet and shower. There is a kitchen and living room available for use as well as a washing machine.
Transportation: Volunteers can be collected from Rockhampton Airport and Train station or at the Malborough Greyhound bus station. IVI can assist you to organise a Greyhound bus pass to allow for weekend trips and transport to second placements.
Hours of Activity: The day will start at 7.30 am and finish at 4.30pm with a morning tea and lunch break. As the wallabies are nocturnal animals there may be some activities such as pen rotation and health checks between the hours of 8pm and midnight. Volunteers will receive two days off during the three week period.
Visa Requirements: It is the responsibility of all participants to obtain any necessary visas.
Required Items: Warm clothes for evenings, sleeping bag, hat, sunscreen, towel, mosquito repellent and basic toiletries.
