Work-campsParticipation fee for all work-camps: USD 280 – This includes Food, Accommodation, Eating
utensils and Transport once a volunteer is on the work camp at the
beginning date, to and from the work camp area.
KNG001 & KNG006: Kakamega, 12.08.07 - 25.08.07 & 13.01.08 - 26.01.08 Work: The volunteers will be working on rehabilitating the River Yala whose banks have eroded. There will be an educational session in the community on business entrepreneurship and the importance of environmental conservation. Volunteers will be working with the community with a lot of help coming from the government through the assistant chief of Ivonda. The project aims at reducing silting in the river Yala and erosion along its bank. Accommodation: The volunteers will be accommodated in one of community member’s homes as he owns two houses which are unoccupied. They have the necessary facilities that are bathroom, pit latrine and ample cooking area. Volunteers will be provided with locally available foodstuffs bought from the community. There will be someone onsite to prepare the volunteer’s food but the volunteers could also be of assistance. Location: Ivonda is in Kakamega district, which is the largest town in Western province and also its headquarters. There is only 30 minutes away from the town and can accessed by public transport. Special Remarks: The work of restoring Yala river will be manual but there is a lesser physical involving project on education. This will be easier for any physically challenged volunteers and any participant with experience in business entrepreneurship or stream restoration is highly encouraged. KNG002: Mwatate, 09.09.07 - 22.09.07 Work: The volunteers will work with the entire community. Most of the people are farmers and the challenge facing this community is the bad road network. The main objective of the work camp will be to inspire and encourage the community, foster cultural exchange and international understanding. The main work that the volunteers will do is building a road that will open the community to the outside world and make it easily accessible. Accommodation: WCK will provide locally available foodstuffs bought from the community. There will be someone onsite to prepare the volunteer’s food but the volunteers could also be of assistance and they will be accommodated in centers or classrooms provided by the host community. Location: Wongonyi is a beautiful, picturesque and hilly area which borders the Tsavo national park and is about 2 hours from Mombasa town. Special Remarks: The region is hilly and rugged with jutting rocks thus might prove difficult to some physically challenged volunteers. KNG003: Voi, 07.10.07 - 20.10.07 Work: The participants will work with youth from three different villages namely Wongonyi, Mrangi and Mole. This community is marginalized hence lacks information on important issues that are crucial to its sustainability. The volunteers will help raise awareness on issues like HIV/AIDS and its stigma, environmental issues, importance of education, drugs and others affecting the community. The main objective of the camp is to changes people’s attitudes so as to have better quality of life as well as share experiences and ideas. The work will be teaching and raising awareness in areas that affect the community while exchanging best practices. Accommodation: WCK will provide locally available foodstuffs bought from the community. There will be someone onsite to prepare the volunteer’s food but the volunteers could also be of assistance and they will be accommodated in centers of classrooms provided by the host community. KNG004: Busia, 04.11.07 - 17.11.07 Work: Volunteers will be renovating stalls at the Marachi Market as well making compost pit for depositing organic food wastes from the market and there is also a possibility of building a latrine for the market. The project is a partnership between two organisations, one being a youth group based in the community and is involved in income generating activities as well as sensitizing community on the importance of conserving the environment. Accommodation: Bumula high school which is only 20 minutes walk from the work station will be accommodation for the volunteers. There is one unoccupied dormitory and classroom which will be used as sleeping rooms. Location: Marachi is located in Busia district about 30 minutes to Busia town ad one hour to Kisumu Special Remarks: The work is manual. KNG005: Mwatate, 02.12.07 - 15.12.07 Work: The volunteers will mainly partner with the youth groups from the community. The main activity will be road building as the road is extremely bad, helping to repair classrooms, building gabions to conserve the top soil by preventing soil erosion due to steepness of the area. The main objective of the camp is the aspect of cultural exchange and also learning through experience for the volunteers as well community members. Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in centers or classrooms provided by the host community. Location: Ronge Juu neighbors Wongonyi and the biggest town nearby is Mwatate. Special Remarks: The region is hilly and rugged with jutting rocks thus might prove difficult to some volunteers. KNG007: Rachunyo, 10.02.08 - 23.02.08 Work: The Kadiege community borders the famous fresh water lake called Lake Victoria and despite it being home to many intellectuals it is the poorest region in Kenya according to statistics this year. The volunteers will mainly work with the youth from the community in addressing the issue of soil erosion which has swept away big chunks of land that would have been used for farming activities or other infrastructure. The objective of the project is to bring the community closer to the rest of the world as it has little or no interaction at all. The community has a rich cultural and belief system and this will enhance the cultural exchange aspect in the camp. The main activities will be tree planting, building gabions and construction. Accommodation: The volunteers will be accommodated in classrooms, centres or houses provided by the community. Location: Ivonda is in Kakamega district, which is the largest town in Western province and also its headquarters. There is only 30 minutes away from the town and can accessed by public transport. River Yala flows to the Lake Victoria. KNG008: Budalangi, 09.03.08 - 22.09.08 Work: The Budalangi community is at Port Victoria and their greatest challenge is flooding and the reulting in waterborne diseases. The volunteers will work with the community in a community based organization. The main objective of this work camp is to integrate the participants into the local community so as to learn from their host about the issues affecting them. The volunteers will mainly be involved in AIDS awareness, visiting orphans and single parents and other AIDS victim’s custodians.
