Bangalore-1 (Teaching & Happy Hearts)

With the ideas and creativity of hundreds of past volunteers in India, the hosts are developing the 'Sunrise Model of Education' a method of effective teaching which is practical and fun to use. The Sunrise model was designed as a helping structure to teaching anyone who has never been to a school or attended any kind of formal education. To teach a person who has never been educated in his/her life is going to be difficult, and the Sunrise Model also summarizes 12 years of conventional education with one basic structure. Teaching English & Special Education in a self-chosen fashion to the local children at a primary as well as at center premises during & after school activities. Developing lesson plans and ideas in the group and passing this information through for future volunteers is part of the plan to create follow-up and long-term improvements in an educational model created with the help of hundreds of volunteers. "Have fun while you learn", is the concept of this unique project, our ongoing Happy Hearts projects exclusively for the orphan and street children. Joy or happiness is an integral part of the life inseparable that otherwise human beings would quickly die of boredom and monotony and our children are no exception to this. Entertainment with Education is the method of these projects, for the volunteers will be taking the children out on a one-day picnic everyday in an effort to bring some entertainment into their lives. Apart from just play and fun, the children will also be visiting places of various vocational centers like bio-farms, parks, nature clubs, museums etc, in order that the children can form ideas in their young minds which would later evolve as they grow-up to what careers they can take up in their lives and bring consciousness about the environment and the planet they are living at. You have to love children, as you will be surrounded with loads of them everyday.
Location: Bangalore City, South India
Accommodation: Will be at the Homebase, shared rooms.

The mission of this project is to: Organise a multi-purpose project to involve the community and sensitize community/people about the Health & Hygiene problems; educate the children to build a better and more conscious society; spread awareness on Women rights issues and social welfare; Environmental issues; First Aid/ CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) training; working with other NGO's in community service projects. The kind of schedule and the focus of the project will be adapted to the season, the possibilities and the needs of the moment, to improve the achievements in a long-term view. Its laidback atmosphere and amazing beaches give it a very distinctive touch. It is also a prime location for learning yoga and meditation in one of its many ashrams. It is also the home of Auroville, the famous international community created by the Guru Sri Auro Bindo.

The association cooperates here with our long-standing partner, the most active local NGO in the fields of rural development, education, women and minorities empowerment. In the past years the cooperation of the association has allowed the success of many camps in which many schools and villages have benefited from the work done, including in the Tsunami-hit regions. There is an opening a home base in a village 10 kms from the city which will become a shelter for children and old aged people in an effort to support the poorer sections of the population in the district. The volunteers will be involved in various activities ranging from physical work at the center, creative and entertainment activities in schools and kindergardens and awareness spreading on issues related to education, environment protection, health and hygiene. The idea is to tackle the burning issues that the rural populations are facing in all ways.

In this camp volunteers will work for an underprivileged, suppressed and vulnerable community. Bangalore is one of the fastest growing cities of the world in the IT field (Information Technology). People are from different countries and from different states of India are migrating here to study, for employment, to settle or for business; 80% of the people migrating to Bangalore are from the lower and middle classes. There are more than 600 slums in the city. In Bangalore there are people living without any proper basic facilities like ventilated houses, roads, healthy and hygienic or water drinking facilities. The slum dwellers are involved in construction work, work shops, petty shops, domestic work and getting paid daily wages. INSG004: Madurai - Female Infanticide

Madurai is the second biggest city in Tamil Nadu and the oldest city in India; it has its own cultural and religious heritage history. The world’s biggest Meenakshi temple, Nayakar palace, Gandhi museums and Noble Educational Institutions are there. Tourist visiting places like Kodaikanal, Alagar hills and Vaigai Dam are very near from this city (3 – 4 hour journey).
Rural Madurai is really rich culturally; it has activities such as Indian folk dance, song, music and local festivals (Meenakshi Marriage, Chithra). The main occupation of the people in rural Madurai is Agriculture (farming, cultivation, crop growing); these areas still live under poverty but are very rich in hospitality.
In the rural areas of Madurai we also can see much female infanticide, this as a result of the Dowry System. In the Dowry system, woman have to provide the man with money, jewels, house utensils, transportation according to occupation, etc. before marriage. If the women cannot provide all this, then she is not able to be married. When a woman is not able to get married she then becomes a burden to her family, which causes economical crisis. Even if a woman provides enough to a man, and is able to marry him, the woman’s family still has after marriage rituals to pay for which also causes economical problems. Due to this situation some families decide to prevent this kind of future expense and economical problems by killing their newborn baby girls. Government officials in Madurai and in India have taken lots of initiative to try to control and eradicate this social happening, but unfortunately it still continues in some parts of rural Madurai.
This volunteer organization feels great responsibility to try to “SAVE THE GIRL CHILD” and give them a good and healthy environment for their future. So here we have started the volunteer service programme with the help of local partners, we are all working for this noble cause.

Thirupur is one of the cotton and hosiery cities in India; it gives life to more than 10 million people, and is also the city that gives more income to the Indian Government. This city is surrounded by lots of villages and some of the villages are facing untouchable problems between high caste and untouchables. Every village consists of at least 3 - 4% untouchable people. There are frequent problems between these castes which damage community peace. The volunteer organisation is committed to bring social change in this community through volunteer services to have rich experiences in some of the villages. At these days this communities have become so peaceful with one another and communal harmony is their strength.
The host organisation is encouraging volunteers to have their own family set up in these villages; the volunteers will be staying with a family and work with them in their Agriculture field, attend their family functions, marriage, be involved in their community festivals as well as teach their children. This camp is giving tremendous experiences to the volunteers as well as the families; they are gaining new friendships to the extent of having their own Indian family.
