Geography: Thailand shares borders with Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), Laos and Cambodia. The east coast is the Gulf of Thailand and the west coast is the Andaman Sea. There are four main areas: the northern mountains (highest peak - 2596m Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai province) with the fertile valley; the poorer, high north-east plateau region at 300m; the fertile, central plains of the Chao Phraya River; and the rainforests of the southern peninsula.

Climate: Tropical; rainy, warm, cloudy southwest monsoon (mid-May to September); dry, cool northeast monsoon (November to mid-March); southern isthmus always hot and humid.
